Well that did not take long. Not even a week after announcing Sam Darnold as the number 2 Quarterback and Kyle Shanahan stating he hopes Lance stays with the team, Trey Lance has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys.
This is an absolute win for Dallas. We critiqued them for not adding a young QB like Dorian Thompson Robinson to push Dak (who is overrated in our opinion) and either get more from Dak or replace him. They did not do this and everything broke right for Jerry World & Company as they get a former first round prospect who still possesses massive upside. Since they have Prescott who can at least win in the regular season, they do not have to rush Lance. We still think Trey Lance, like Zach Wilson, can be a starter in this league if patience is exercised. San Francisco payed a heavy price for Lance, but got extremely lucky by hitting on Purdy and therefore made Trey expendable. In fact, if they had not hit on Purdy we think the 49ers would be starting Trey Lance now for better or worse.
This situation is extremely reminiscent of Washington when they took RG3 and Kirk in the same draft and it ended up being Kirk as the guy there. Yes we know Purdy was the year after Lance but that is not the point. Lance gets a fresh start that is much needed and Dallas gives up a small price to get insurance for Prescott.
