The headline is true, Trevon Diggs is now the highest paid corner in the league after signing a 5 year, $97 million extension with Dallas. It is almost half guaranteed and, in our opinion, is an over pay. Is Diggs a good corner? Yes. He is one of the best ball hawks and playmakers at the position. He has 2 pro bowls (though fan voting makes those less special) and one all pro in his young career.
As we said Diggs is a good player and has accolades already, yet he is not worthy of being the top paid corner in our opinion. He has absolutely improves his coverage skills, but is still not great.
Trevon Diggs rank among CBs with at least 300 snaps in coverage
— Cowboys Stats & Graphics (@CowboysStats) July 25, 2023
2021 rank → 2022 rank
Targets allowed per coverage snap
66th → 16th
Yards allowed at the catch point per snap
89th → 15th
Yards after the catch allowed per snap
94th → 75th
INT+PBU per snap
3rd → 30th
While these statistics do not tell the whole story, it does shed light on the fact that Diggs is being paid as a top coverage corner, and is not close yet. He could improve to be worth this contract, but there is a good chance it becomes somewhat of an eye sore on the Cowbpys books in a couple of seasons.
