Graded Wide Receiver Traits:

  • Durability: 9/10 (Had an ankle injury this year that nagged him for weeks. His frame leaves a little bit of worry that he could be susceptible but not a huge concern)
  • Hands: 7/10 (Pretty good hands but does have the occasional drop especially on high passes and catches through contact)
  • Release: 6/10 (Easily beats off coverage with a variety of get offs including stutter steps and quick releases. Was not pressed a ton this year but against Ringo in the National Championship he really struggled although it was not all his fault. Once he had time he was able to use his speed to separate but had a hard time beating the press coverage even with different moves)
  • RAC Ability: 8/10 (Not quite a running back with the ball in his hands but very close. Has a devastating spin move out of comeback routes that is devastating. Also utilizes a lot of jukes and stiff arms as well. Gets knocked slightly for a fumbling issue he seems to have)
  • Route Running: 9/10 (Ran a lot of different routes from different alignments on the field. Crossers, go routes, double moves, and more were all ran. Especially good at planting on comeback routes and suddenness on crossers)
  • Speed: 8/10 (Seems to possess near elite speed to burn the defense on deep routes. Not quite top of the scale but still very good)
  • Strength: 5/10 (For someone of his size this area is disappointing. He relies more on jukes and elusiveness and struggles with contested catches where he contact is made. Really struggled with jam coverage against Ringo)
  • Versatility: 9/10 (Played multiple different receiver positions as well as took jet sweeps. Has the speed and size and ball carrier moves to be used in multiple different ways)

Prospect Grade: 61/80; 76% (Pro Bowl Potential)

Projected Draft Day: 1

Player Comparison: Darrius Heyward-Bey

Player Summary:

Johnston has been on the radar all season long. He is a massive size/speed prospect with a ton of upside. Despite being 6”4 he plays like a much smaller receiver (not necessarily in a bad way) with elite speed, route running, and RAc ability that makes him incredibly difficult to defend. He took over the Michigan game when they played soft coverage, but struggled to get anything against press and Ringo with Georgia. Granted, a lot of his one catch blame in the championship falls on Duggan, he still has average strength and good press corners could give him trouble. He still possesses elite talent as a crips route runner with solid hands and great speed with the size to project upside should he learn how to use it.
