Player Comparison: Richie Incognito

Player Summary: Zion Johnson is a super physical guard, especially in the run game. Johnson is really smooth transitioning his blocks and getting up to the second level. Johnson is a good lead blocker and is solid at bait and release on things like screens where he needs to get out in front of the play. Johnson is also good with his arm extension and keeping defenders off his body.

Johnson is another lineman who can tend to overextend his upper body and shift his center of gravity in a bad way. Johnson is a pretty inconsistent pass blocker and I saw a mix of good and bad in his film. I think his arm extension and ability to keep defenders off his body is an aspect of his game that will help him as a pass blocker. When Johnson had a man to block either head up or in the gap, he looked good as a pass blocker. When Johnson was left uncovered and had to read the front for blitzers and stunters rather than just block he seemed to struggle a little more. Overall, Johnson should be able to step in as a day one starter. It would probably be better if he was drafted by a first run team, but should be able to hold up in pass protection.
