- Other Notes: Clearly seemed to have the best rep against the sled to simulate blocking. Showed soft hands in pass catching drills. Also showed good enough speed on pass catching drills, although nothing breakaway.
Strengths: Very good and willing run blocker at the line of scrimmage, handled defensive ends when asked and rarely got beat, soft hands, smooth runner and fluid route runner,
Weaknesses: Down field blocking is iffy, not the fastest or biggest tight end, only caught 1 touchdown despite 90 catches,
Projected Draft Day: Day 2
Player Comparison: Dalton Schultz
Player Summary: Trey McBride won the award for the best tight end in college football. Put on the tape and it is easy to see why. While he does not possess elite speed or size for a tight end, he does it all. His blocking is off the charts both in the combine and on film. He frequently wins against defensive ends and dominates on linebackers. He has pretty sure hands to match this, and is fast enough to get by some linebackers and has enough size to have an advantage on defensive backs. In the NFL, we could see him becoming a quarterback’s best friend. He can be a great blocker and someone who can sit down and find the soft zones and occasionally catch a deep throw or two when the matchup is right. I can imagine him being used in the mold of Dalton Schultz in Dallas or how Austin Hooper was in Atlanta. A player who can have a ton of targets and catches, but may never have crazy receiving yards or have a ton of touchdowns.
