Player Comparison: Slower Version of Tyreek Hill

Player Summary: Early on in the pre-draft process, we heard comparisons of John Metchie to Tyreek Hill. Immediately it made us scoff as there always seems to be a receiver that is very fast that gets compared to Hill. However, reports started coming out that Metchie’s speed was a concern, which made the Hill comparison even more peculiar. Watching the tape, it is hard not to see a lot of Hill’s play style in John Metchie. Before we get into the similarities, our comp for Metchie is a much slower Hill, as the lack of elite speed is evident on tape. First off, both are chaotic after the catch. When they catch the ball they both constantly dart around and rarely just go for the end zone. This leads to a ton of broken tackles and the appearance of being very slippery. Metchie also shows the ability to explode off the line of scrimmage as Hill does and to stop his route on a dime, again as Hill does. However, this comparison goes both ways. Metchie had some truly head shaking drops at different points this last season, just like Hill does, but did a lot to make people forget about them. It also seems like his drops are for the same reason Hill has drops, because their hands are not always in the correct position to catch the pass. The biggest difference between the two, as mentioned, is that Metchie does not possess the other worldly speed that Hill does. When you think of Tyreek, if he had average speed, what kind of receiver would he be? The answer is John Metchie. A player who may have to only play out of the slot, who will struggle against press coverage and physical corners, but also can offer a ton after the catch and get open with route running.
