Player: James Cook

School: Georgia

Height and Weight: 5’11”, 199

Combine Results:

  • 40: 4.42
  • Bench: DNP
  • Vertical Jump: 33
  • Broad Jump: 124
  • 3 Cone: DNP
  • Other Notes: Showed off good athleticism and tested pretty well. Looked good in the positional drills, but really shined in the pass catching drills.

Strengths: A home run threat, excels at catching passes, still has a lot of tread as he was not used much in college, very good at running routes out of the backfield, can also be lined out wide and used in a variety of ways, good at reading the running lanes when they are there, good pass blocking

Weaknesses: Not a ton of play strength, very little college production as part of a committee, does not create a ton for himself, not overly elusive and does not have many ball carrier moves

Projected Draft Day: Early Day 3

Player Comparison: Nyheim Hines

Player Summary: Cook is a home run threat out of the backfield. On any play, given good blocking or the ability to get to the edge, he can take it to the house. Unfortunately, he does not seem to be the runner needed to handle an every down back role in the NFL. He is too easy to bring down, lacks a ton of rushing moves, and is too dependent on the rushing lanes having to be there. That being said, Cook is absolutely lethal as a pass catcher coming out of the backfield. He came to Georgia as a WR and it shows. He runs great routes, alternates releases, and can handle lining up as a WR with ease. He can be a great weapon in the NFL in the way that James White and JD Mckissic are. However, his comp for us is Nyheim Hines. Like Hines, Cook can get some carries here and there and take any one of those to the house (as opposed to White or Mckissic who rarely run the ball), but excels as a pass catcher. He can play the slot or outside, be part of two running back sets, or be the third down back as he is also great at pass blocking. He is most likely a 4th rounder because of his limitations, but would be one that immediately has a roll and can repeatedly catch 50 or more passes per season out of the backfield.
