Player: Isaiah Spiller
School: Texas A&M
Height and Weight: 6’0”, 217
Combine Results:
- 40: 4.63 (pro day)
- Bench: DNP
- Vertical Jump: 30, 33 at pro day
- Broad Jump: 114
- 3 Cone: DNP
- Other Notes: Spiller did not do much testing and claimed hamstring injury. This may have been true, but for a player with concerns about speed it was not good. He tested average in his jumps. At his pro day he ran a 4.63 which is not deal breaking, but also does arise concerns.
Strengths: Three straight seasons of good college production, ran a lot of different routes out of the backfield, good change of direction, finishes play action strong and really sells it, keeps lower legs moving through contact, uses a nice upfield jump cut, shows patience in the backfield that is good and bad at times, hard to bring down when hit high,
Weaknesses: Ability to hit the homerun may be in question due to speed, dances around too much in the backfield at times and loses yards, movement can be chaotic at times, only okay at pass blocking, besides the jump cut and jukes not many ball carrier moves are used, not as much power as you would want for a player his size, goes down easier than you would want when defenders go low on him
Projected Draft Day: Day 2
Player Comparison: David Montgomery
Player Summary: Spiller uses a patient, jumping/bouncing running style with a lot of jump cuts. There are times where he jump cuts and bounces around and breaks three tackles, and there are other times where he goes down in the backfield because he plays around too much. His bouncing style can also be a bit too chaotic at times. When he is hit low he goes down pretty easy, but keeps legs churning through contact when hit high. He does not utilize many power moves when running the ball and is not super sudden which is jukes. He is very good out of the backfield catching the ball, and was asked to run a lot of routes and runs them well. He plays hard and sells play action. He can be a three down back, although one that may make a bigger and more effective impact in the passing game while being a decent runner. His speed concerns are legit, as multiple times you saw defenses catch up to him from behind, but he also reads lanes well and can be a four to five yard per carry back without breaking off huge runs. Expect him to go on day two, most likely third round, and be on a team that needs a little bit of everything from their running back, like David Montgomery on the Bears.
