Prospect Profile: Desmond Ridder

Player: Desmond Ridder

School: University of Cincinnati

Height and Weight: 6’3”, 211

Combine Results:

  • 40: 4.52
  • Bench: DNP
  • Broad Jump: 36”
  • Vertical Jump: 10’7”
  • 3 Cone: 7.15
  • 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.29
  • Other Notes: He looked okay throwing the ball. He showed good arm strength but accuracy was touch and go. Where he shined, reports say, was in his interviews. He apparently gave off a very good impression as a guy who can be a great leader.

Strengths: Decent athleticism, good throwing motion, pretty good arm strength (although it does not always show), when in a rhythm most throws are on the money with good zip

Weaknesses:  A decent amount of touchdowns watched as well as red zone throws could have easily been turnovers, can get glued onto his first reads, could be pretty big turnover liability in pros, seems to really need to get into a rhythm to be consistent otherwise throws are erratic

Projected Draft Day: Day 2

Player Comparison: Daniel Jones

Player Summary: Ridder is a hard player to really predict. He shows some flashes, but there is not enough consistency on tape to say he is a sure thing. The comparisons that were made of him to Mariota at the combine are just not close. They may have run similarly, but Ridder is nowhere near the runner (in burst, elusiveness, and more) that Mriota is. Ridder shows good athleticism, a nice throwing motion, pretty good arm strength at times, and good throws when in a rhythm. Too many touchdowns thrown, though, really should have been interceptions. Whether it be the defensive back not turning around on an underthrow, or the wide receiver making a play on a bad pass, Ridder seemed to be bailed out more than once. Now, that is not to say the opposite was not true as well, as his receivers dropped a lot of passes too. Ridder seems to get glued onto his first read a lot of the time and needs to learn to progress faster. He also appears to be a big rhythm passer. If he starts off slow it is hard for him to be consistent. His comp is Daniel Jones. He will flash very good athleticism, good deep throws, but may have issues in the red zone and on short throws. Issues with plenty of turnover potential throws and a lot of unnecessary fumbles concern me. He could end up with a turnover or more a game, like Daniel Jones has.
