Graded Quarterback Traits:

  • Accuracy: 4/10 (Arm strength to hit all the throws but struggles with accuracy at all levels. Even short accuracy is spotty which has to get better)
  • Anticipation: 4/10 (It may just be that he needs more experience but this is a big area of improvement. He has the arm to do it but needs to learn where to put the ball better on most routes. He is not far off on most of the misses but he is off and lost a few touchdowns on underthrows that were not arm strength issues)
  • Arm Strength: 8/10 (Ball jumps out of hand and a lot of throws look effortless no matter the distance or if feet or set)
  • Mechanics: 4/10 (Release is very long ala Darnold but also can be very quick and repeatable. He drops his shoulder a lot and ends up with a very side arm motion at times. His feet are not always set. One of the biggest reasons he needs to sit is to clean up mechanics)
  • Mobility: 10/10 (His athleticism is high level. While not as fast as one may think, he runs in a punishing style while inviting contact. He is as likely to truck or stiff arm a player as he is to jump over them. Think of similar running styles to Josh Allen or Cam Newton).
  • Pocket Presence: 7/10 (Decent idea of the pocket. Knows when to use his legs but for someone as mobile as he is he keeps his eyes downfield more often than not. As a decent sense of the pressure)
  • Poise: 5/10 (Richardson is willing to get hit and does not shy away from the pass rush, which gives him the 5, but his accuracy disappears and ends up with some super risky throws and that could mean a ton of turnovers)
  • Progressions: 6/10 (While he may not make the right decision especially in pressure, Richardson goes through progressions on most plays unless the first read is definitely there. He just need to learn to make the reads and throws faster)

Prospect Grade: 48/80; 60% (Potential starter but needs a lot of growth sitting. He is an exception where his grade does not represent his very lofty upside)

Projected Draft Day: 1

Player Comparison: More athletic Jordan Love

Player Summary:

Richardson feels like this class’s boom or bust prospect. The high end arm and athleticism prospect that could be the next big thing, but with a ton of risk. He is reminiscent of guys like Trey Lance, Kellen Mond, and Jordan Love. He possesses a rocket arm (with a long motion) as well as elite athleticism that allows him to be a punishing runner like Josh Allen. I wanted to see a lot of growth from him this season and yet he was just average. He plays way too much hero ball and makes some of the ugliest decisions you will see in the face of the rush. That being said, he also has some incredible plays. He needs to grow in every aspect, but if he does, he could be special. He has the ceiling of someone like Josh Allen if he continues to develop. If he has already reached his ceiling, think of someone more like Mond where he is not even a great backup. Like Jordan Love, he needs to go somewhere and learn and sit for one season or more.
