This article covers our predictions for what should be a very exciting 2024 Quarterback Carousel. Is it likely this many moves will happen? Probably not, but this is what we would do with each QB and how we would like to see it play out.
Justin Fields traded to the PatriotsÂ
- Fields is seemingly a great fit for Atlanta and he has been rumored there for quite some time. However, Atlanta has been more linked to Cousins recently and if the Falcons wanted Fields we would have seen that trade already (we think). New England just traded Mac Jones and could be looking to the draft for a new QB, but this team is far from ready for that. Sending a 3rd of day 3 pick package for Fields whose market is reportedly weaker than expected would make far more sense for a team and signal a new direction with a new regime.
Baker Mayfield resigns with Tampa Bay
- This should have been done already and with the resigning of Mike Evans, should be a no brainer.
Mac Jones traded to Jacksonville (Official as of 3/10)
- This one we did not see coming, nor would we expect anyone did. It is hard to believe other teams with an aging quarterback or uncertainty at the position could not have made this deal. All it cost was a 6th, but now the Jags have one of the better backups in the league.
Russell Wilson signs with Washington
- Wilson has met with Pittsburgh and the Giants so far, but we do not think he signs with either. Instead we suspect Washington (who has been fielding trade calls for Howell) will sign him and draft a QB that can sit behind Wilson while he develops. Wilson takes a prove it deal while the QB (in our Mock 2.0 it is Drake Maye who falls a bit) can get the time necessary to develop.
Kirk Cousins resigns with Minnesota
- Similar to Baker, we are surprised this has taken so long. If Justin Jefferson wants Cousins, Minnesota needs to bring him back. We initially had Mac Jones being traded to Minnesota as well for insurance behind Cousins, but maybe they now look to a day 2 QB instead.
Zach Wilson traded to the Chiefs
- Wilson needs a hard reset, and learning from Mahomes and Reid can allow him to slowly start rebuilding his career. The Chiefs also lack a high end backup and Wilson offers more upside than the typical QB2.
Trey Lance traded to NYJ
- Why Dallas is willing to trade Lance we do not know, but they also seem insistent on paying Dak a ton of money. If Lance actually is available, he could go to the Jets to continue developing with upside (basically trading for another Zach Wilson type player that has not been scrutinized by the New York media).
Gardner Minshew signs with PIT
- Pittsburgh needs to do something at the QB position, but we think they make more of an underrated move than a splashy one. Minshew has been one of the best backups in football but deserves a true chance to start and he should get one here
Daniel Jones stays in NYG (unable to find trade partner)
- The contract is ugly but has an out after next season. We have the Giants trading up for Jayden Daniels, making Jones the most expensive backup inf football.
Jameis Winston signs with LVR
- Jameis just feels like a Raider. You know he will sling it and keep Davante happy with targets. He offers more upside than anyone in the room, and the Raiders can continue to rebuild/retool this team under the new direction.
Sam Howell traded to LAR
- Sam Howell needs out of Washington, and we truly believe he can be a good starter in this league. Perhaps, though, he needs some time to reset in a stable organization under a good QB, and the Rams can offer that.
Drew Lock signs with PHI
- Philly needs a higher end backup than Mariota, and Lock can be that for them.
Carson Wentz signs with ATL
- We initially had Wentz resigning with the Rams, but with former Rams staff now in charge in Atlanta, we wonder if they instead Wentz follows then there to start while their rookie develops.
Sam Darnold signs with Seattle
- How fun would it be to watch two former Jets busts battle it out for a starting role?
Malik Willis traded to BAL
- Again, if you are looking for a good backup for your starter, Willis to Baltimore makes a lot of sense
Bailey Zappe traded to SF
- With Darnold likely leaving, the 49ers need a new backup that free agency just does not have in our opinion (Zappe should cost a day 3 pick at most).
Jacoby Brissett signs with IND
- Brissett could go to a place to compete as a starter but he also could be viewed as one of the better mentor options in the NFL, we think the latter and he becomes a teacher for Anthony Richardson.
Jimmy G starts a podcast with Sam Hartman
- Jimmy should have no problems transitioning to on air talent if he wants. But, with Sam Hartman’s rough go of it in the pre draft process, we wonder if they can start a podcast together to talk football and get a ton of views.
