Our Eagles Ideal Offseason Plans/Thoughts:
- I can’t say that we’ve ever seen an offseason quite like the Eagles are about to have. They are losing 16 key pieces to their 2022 success. They have just about $5.5 million in cap space. They are not paying a QB top tier money yet. The bill you are going to rack up on players and the production that you have to pay for/pay to replace this offseason is much larger than what you have. You have to replace a majority of your starting defense and reserves. Not to mention you have minimal draft capital(2-1st, a 2nd, a 3rd, 2-7th) Obviously it’s nice to have 2 first rounders, but you may have to trade one of them for more draft capital.
- Sanders, Hargrave, Bradberry, and CJGJ have been the names talked about as the priorities to bring back, and it doesn’t sound like they are getting any of them back. CJGJ ,who we believed should’ve been priority #1, posted on social media a thank you to Philly. That doesn’t even include the retirement rumors around Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson.
- The running backs room, which is set to lose FA Miles Sanders could be addressed on day 2 or even day 3 of the draft thanks to how deep this year’s RB class is. Expect the Eagles to bring back fan favorite and Giant slayer Boston Scott. We love Gainwell and fully expect him to be able to take over the Eagles backfield without skipping a beat. The Eagles could use a back with a bit of size to pair with Gainwell(Like Blount and Ajayi the super bowl year). Someone like UCLA’s Zach Charbonnet or Auburn’s Tank Bigsby could make a ton of sense.
- The Eagles have one of the best 1-2’s at WR with AJ Brown and Devonta Smith. They’ve been ignoring the WR3 spot for a while now. Quez Watkins is a great WR4/5, but he showed in the Super Bowl why he can’t be relied on as WR3. Zach Pascal was only brought in because he was a Sirianni guy in Indy, but in 2021 he was graded as one of the worst, maybe even the worst WR, yet they still signed him last offseason. Look for the Eagles to sign a cheap veteran option looking to win a ring. We suspect Jarvis Landry could be that guy. He missed 8 games last season, but throughout most of his career he’s been the definition of reliable.
- The Eagle’s offensive line may be the most up in the air position room in all the NFL this offseason. RG Isaac Seumalo is set to become a FA and is probably priced beyond what Philly can pay. Jason Kelce has been debating retirement after every year for the last several seasons now, and it could finally be the year, although no decision has been made yet. There are now also retirement rumors surrounding RT Lane Johnson. If Kelce retires the good news is that they drafted Cam Jurgens as his successor last year, but will need to replace Seumalo. If Kelce doesn’t retire then you could kick Jurgens to guard to fill in for Seumalo(like they did with Dickerson at LG). If Johnson were to retire then you could try to re-sign Dillard if the staff has faith in him. Jack Driscoll could also be an option to fill in. The biggest problem becomes if Johnson and Kelce retire because then you have to replace 3 players/the whole right side of your line. If you want flexibility you could look at Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski or North Dakota State’s Cody Mauch(although we believe he’ll be best suited at tackle). If you are looking to draft Johnson’s successor this year, look at Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison or Georgia’s Broderick Jones. It’s a pretty crazy situation for the Eagles that seems like it could have a plethora of outcomes.
- The Eagles are known for their insane defensive line depth and ability to rotate players in and out based upon situation or even just drive to drive to keep in fresh bodies. They have 6 players about to hit FA, which would diminish their rotation massively. Hargrave’s time in Philly is more than likely over. Suh and Joseph could theoretically be brought back on veteran minimum. Quinn is a hard one to get a gauge on. Cox and Graham are two players that it’s just hard to picture playing for anyone else, but unless they want to take a massive hometown discount could be done in Philly(assuming they don’t retire). The rotation at DE should still be okay with Reddick, K.Johnson, Sweat, and Barnett(if he can stay healthy). The DT rotation is taking the biggest hit as you are left with Davis and Williams. 2021 6th rounder Tuipulotu could find his way into the rotation, but it would require him to prove it this offseason. He hasn’t been able to find his footing in the league thus far, but Jerry Tillery is a low cost DT piece that could find his way in Philly. Tillery wouldn’t be required to be an every down player, and could find himself while in a role in Philly.
- Although we believe that Jalen Carter is going to be fine when it’s all said and done, a warrant was put out for his arrest while he was at the Combine for speeding and reckless driving that potentially could have caused the crash killing teammate Devin Willock and Georgia recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy. People have Jalen Carter starting to tumble due to said arrest. If on draft night Carter does actually tumble down the board, if you’re the Eagles… you HAVE to move up to get him. If you could put Carter and Davis next to each other once again, you would have outstanding DT play for the next at least 10 years.
- The LB room will need to be addressed once again. This may have been the best LB play the Eagles have had in a very long time. However, both TJ Edwards and Kyzir White are set to become FAs. Coming off strong 2022 campaigns it’s entirely possible the Eagles won’t be able to re-sign either LB. Luckily, they got an absolute steal in Nakobe Dean in the 3rd round last year. In his minimal playing time this year, Dean looked really good, and should be able to take over as a starter next season. He is going to need a partner in crime though. They could definitely draft another young LB, but with minimal draft capital it’s more likely that they hit FA. Look for Krys Barnes to be an option for Philly.
- Plain and simple, the Eagles need to draft a CB. The CB depth actually isn’t too bad, but they need to draft a CB that can start opposite Slay. No one deserves to watch Maddox play as the Eagles CB2 again. We all saw how that went in 2021, and it wasn’t pretty. Maddox is a good CB3/slot, but not much more than that. Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez should absolutely be on the Eagles board at pick 10. If they can get Gonzalez at 10, that would be a massive steal.
- The Eagles are going to need at least one safety this offseason. As stated earlier, CJGJ posted his thank you and is probably on his way out, and Epps is set to be a FA. Blankenship, despite being a UDFA, played well when he had to step in due to injury. Blankenship and Wallace could compete for one of the starting safety spots. Losing CJGJ is going to be a massive blow to this defense, but the Eagles could find his replacement in Alabama’s Brian Branch. Branch primarily played nickel at Bama, but also has some safety experience.
