With the NFL Week 7 now concluded, the Gridiron Review takes a look at some of the storylines around the league.
The Giants win again behind a very strong Daniel Jones performance
The Giants continued their stellar start to the season by beating the stumbling Jaguars. It was led by Danny Dimes in what may have been one of his best performances of his career. He passed for 200 yards, but ran for another 100, and continues to not turn the ball over. A coach can make all of the difference and that is seen here. The offense is not high powered, but is very creative and has a lot of contributors. The defense is flat out dominant with Wink leading the way. New York has a winning mentality this year and seems destined for a playoff berth.
Rodgers and Brady suffer humiliating losses
It really feels like an era may be ending. Tom Brady and the Bucs lost to The Carolina Panthers in a game where Tampa did not even score a touchdown. Embarrassing does not even cover it as Brady is in his worst start to a season since 2002. Many are claiming he should have stayed retired, as it seems the team as a whole has lost a couple big steps. Mike Evans had an awful drop that was an easy touchdown so not all fault lies with one person. Brady is also sixth in the league in passing yards and the Panthers do look revamped without Rhule as coach, but still a bad loss nonetheless.
Aaron Rodgers seems to be facing a similar season to Brady. The Packers lost to the Commanders who were playing their backup QB. Regardless of what you think of Wentz, he is better than Heinicke. Even if you wanted to argue against it, Heinicke did not play well for most of the game. The Packers only had 37 rushing yards on the day against a Commanders defense that has been struggling mightily. On the other side Washington ran for 166 yards and repeatedly controlled the line of scrimmage. Green Bay finds themselves with a losing record as well and just do not look good as a whole.
Breece Hall is out for the year, will the Jets let Zach Wilson run the Offense?
Hall’s great rookie season thus far is now over. A torn ACL ends what was becoming a great start to a career. Now, the Jets need to figure out what they want to do. A trade for James Robinson helps sure up the backfield, but neither he nor Carter are as talented as Hall. It begs the question of what the Jets will do offensively. With Zach Wilson back, they have been painfully conservative. It has been so bad that second year receiver, Elijah Moore, requested a trade. Now, that was unprofessional and ridiculous, but it still highlights the awfulness of the Jets offense. Zach Wilson was a top five pick, regardless of whether he is worth it or not, you have to let him throw and grow as a passer to see what you have. The offense instilled does nothing for his growth as a player.
To make things worse you spend a high first round pick on Garrett Wilson and a second on Moore, so why are they not throwing more? Did they learn nothing from Lamar Jackson and how his throwing development was hindered by Greg Roman’s offense? What about Tua in Miami. You do not need to be super talented to run a high powered offense, yet the Jets are committed to not allowing Wilson to work through growing pains.
Greg Roman needs to go
Speaking of Lamar Jackson and Greg Roman, Roman needs to be fired. The Ravens offense is sputtering and just lacks so much creativity. Lamar may be the greatest runner at the quarterback position ever, but Roman seems to forget that he is a great passer too. Play calls like a read option on third and long shows Roman’s lack of creativity or innovation. The only thing that has changed is the upgrade from Hollywood Brown to Bateman. That being said, the awful design of the offense still remains. The Raven’s let Wink Martindale go and he is leading a dominant unit for the Giants. It seems they let the wrong coordinator go which anyone could have said when the move was made, but why Greg Roman still has a job is wild.
