NFL Approves New OT Rule for 2022

An agreement was finally reached for new overtime rules that was sparked by the Bills and Chiefs game (although it was discussed before this). After many different ideas thrown around and discussed, it was settled that both teams would get a possession in the playoffs only, not the regular season. The regular season rules will remain the same. This is a massive win for football and fans. No longer will a playoff game be decided by the flip of a coin. In the regular season, the fact that the rules will not change is not a big deal, especially with the 17 game regular season.

It is one of the rare moves that the NFL has made that has been as positively received as this has. There was a problem and immediately it was solved in a timely manner. We applaud the NFL for handling this the way they did, as one of the best games in recent memory (Chiefs vs Bills) was cut short by the current overtime rules. If Josh Allen had gotten a possession in that game, you could have looked at that as one of the greatest games of all time. Perhaps we will get a rematch in this year’s playoffs, with the new rules in place.
