Graded Quarterback Traits:

  • Accuracy: 3/10 ( This may raise an eyebrow but it really feels like Duggan was figured out in the last three games. His accuracy deep is not good and repeatedly under throws and his accuracy as a whole disappears when pressured)
  • Anticipation: 3/10 (He can hit receivers in stride, but on go  and deep routes he repeatedly misses short and turns touchdowns into jump balls)
  • Arm Strength: 5/10 (Has enough arm to make most of the throws but do not expect it to pop off the screen)
  • Mechanics: 7/10  (Upper body motion is great and repeatable. Throws off back foot way too much especially in face of pressure)
  • Mobility: 7/10 (Very physical runner and has decent speed. May have ran a little too much but he is definitely a threat in the run game)
  • Pocket Presence: 3/10 (Really struggles to feel blind side pressure. Has the mobility to escape when needed but gets hit when throwing way too much throwing. Also does not step up as much as he needs to)
  • Poise: 5/10 (Not afraid to take shots in the pocket but makes a ton of bad decisions and throws and bad decisions)
  • Progressions: 8/10 (Goes through reads well. Could be faster and gets locked in at times but still very good at it)

Prospect Grade: 41/80; 51% (High End Backup)

Projected Draft Day: 3

Player Comparison: Taylor Heinicke

Player Summary:

Max Duggan is one of the best stories in college football this year. From benched to Heisman contender and a remarkable season by TCU. He had a lot of momentum early on as a rising star, however the end of the season may have left a bad taste in evaluators’ mouths. However, we think he was figured out earlier than the national championship game. When you watch the Kansas State game for the Big 12 Championship, Dugga led a great comeback. However, go back and watch the film and Duggan had three plus interceptions thrown that were just flat out dropped by Kansas State. Duggan had lost the game for them time and time again and Kansas State bailed him out. Duggan was also not sharp in the game against Michigan (although at least one of the interceptions was not his fault), and he completely fell apart against Georgia. This is not discounting his heart because he plays with a lot of it. He also has some intangibles to like, but accuracy and pocket presence are necessary in the NFL and he struggles at both. He can still be a high end backup in the league that a team can rally behind due to his heart and leadership. Like Taylor Heinicke in Washington.
