Josh Downs Draft Profile

  • Height: 5”10
  • Weight: 175
  • 40:
  • Bench:
  • Vertical Jump:
  • Broad Jump:
  • 3 Cone:
  • 20 Yard Shuttle:
  • Other Notes:

Graded Wide Receiver Traits:

  • Durability: 9/10 (Handled heavy target share the last two seasons. Only issue was a knee injury that held him out of 2 games early this season)
  • Hands: 8/10 (Has pretty reliable hands when the ball is on target. They become slightly more shaky when the throw is not center mass)
  • Release: 6/10 (Alternates stutter steps on releases to separate. Can be very effective on off coverage but there is serious concern potential of his ability to uncover against athletic press corners)
  • RAC Ability: 5/10 (Rarely does he make a person miss. For someone of his build and profile you would think he offers a ton in this area and he just does not)
  • Route Running: 9/10 (A very good route runner especially on short routes. Executes stutter steps and double moves very well)
  • Speed: 6/10 (His speed is overrated. He is decently fast, do not get us wrong but also would not consider it an elite trait of his. His top level route running makes him appear faster than he is)
  • Strength: 3/10 (Easily overpowered. Can win with route running but worried that physical press corners are going to dominate him at the next level. Also does not keep legs churning through contact with the ball)
  • Versatility: 5/10 (Can offer some value in the return games but almost played exclusively slot at UNC and do not see him having the elite speed to offset his size on the outside in the NFL)

Prospect Grade: 51/80; 64% (Starter Potential)

Projected Draft Day: 2

Player Comparison: Hunter Renfrow

Player Summary:

Athletic testing could completely change this review but his speed just seems very overrated. It feels like he will test more average than expected. If this is the case he may not have the speed to uncover on the outside. That being said he can be a very good starter in the slot thanks to his route running. He has the makings of a starting slot who can get open using route running but may struggle against press coverage.
