Graded Running back Traits:

  • Ball Security: 8/10 ( Had four fumbles his first two seasons, but none this past year. Seems to hold the ball close to his body and not provide much of an opportunity to get it knocked out)
  • Blocking: 5/10 (He is a willing blocker, but has too many whiffs and moments where he gets caught flat footed as a blocker. With how good he is as a pass catcher this needs to be a focus for his development at the next level)
  • Burst: 8/10 (Gets into high gear almost immediately upon getting the ball. Is able to accelerate out of a cut very impressively)
  • Change of Direction: 10/10 (Able to stop and shift directions in the blink of an eye. Feet are constantly moving and shifting to go north-south and side to side)
  • Durability: 7/10 (Had an ankle injury this month but it was not major. He has not exceeded 200 touches in any of his three college seasons so it is unknown if he would hold up in a feature-back workload. The flip side of that, though, is that he has not been overworked at all in college)
  • Elusiveness: 10/10 (If you are required to tackle him one on one in the open field, good luck. Paired with his top notch change of direction is a lethal juke and spin move that can make defenders look silly. Multiple times was a defender right next to him when he was receiving the carry and they barely even grazed him)
  • Pass Catching: 8/10 ( Very good hands and route running as a running back. Asked to run a ton of different routes and could have massive upside in this area at the next level)
  • Power: 4/10 (Average power as a runner. Willing to low shoulder but gets stood up at times and rarely does he drag defenders for extra yards)
  • Speed: 8/10 (does not always seem to be overly fast, but when he gets into high gear he possesses really good speed. Still, does not have blazing speed)
  • Vision: 6/10 (Able to read plays really well as the hole develops in between the tackles. Does not always get through in time to get to the next level but is still very good at reading the running lanes. Bounces outside perhaps too much at times)

Prospect Grade: 74/100; 74% (Pro Bowl Potential)

Projected Draft Day: Late 1

Player Comparison: Alvin Kamara

Player Summary:

Jahmyr Gibbs is the latest Alabama running back to enter the draft, and may find himself sneaking into the first round. While Bijan is the better prospect, Gibbs possesses route running and pass catching abilities that could make him the better pro in the long run. He has a legitimate chance to run for 1000 yards and catch 50 passes. He is wicked in change of direction and elusiveness, and possesses a pretty good combination of burst and speed. He is not going to overpower anyone despite his willingness, and his pass pro needs a lot of work to pair with his hands, but he could still sneak into the end of the first. Kamara is a very popular comp for him and for good reason, as Gibbs could have a similar impact with a similar style on both the ground and in the air that Kamara does.
