Player Summary:
When I turned on Henry To’oto’o’s 2021 film, I was not a fan. I saw a linebacker who was decent in coverage, but was a pretty bad tackler. I think I saw more of his tackles broken than any linebacker I’ve watched in the last couple years. The one thing I will say is that he has great eye discipline. He was probably one of the better linebacker’s I’ve watched at reading his keys and flowing with his reads. The biggest issue I saw is that he’s so keyed in on his reads that he can get himself in trouble at times. He was overthinking too much at times. If you’re a starter at Alabama there’s a reason why. He needs to just trust his instincts a little bit more instead of relying on just his reads. Just go play football. Overall I was a bit disappointed by what I watched.
However, when I watched his 2022 film, I noticed solid improvement from To’oto’o. I thought he looked a little bit stronger and like a slightly better tackler, which was one of my biggest issues with his 2021 film. He still gets beat by reading his keys too much though. I will say though, this kid flashes the potential to be a starter in the league at some point, he just doesn’t show it consistently enough.
UPDATE 3/11:
Draft projection for To’oto’o changed from Mid Round 2- Round 3 to Late Round 4- Round 6.
UPDATE 4/11:
After watching Eli Ricks and the Alabama defense I had to come back around for Round 3 of film breakdown on To’oto’o. When you watch the Alabama defense To’oto’o flashes as a linebacker prospect. However, when you watch To’oto’o the flashes are there but they aren’t as eye-catching as when you aren’t watching him in particular. The following profile aspects were adjusted during this third look.
Tackling: 4.25 → 5.25
Field Vision: 7 → 6.25
Prospect Grade: 43(53.8%) → 43.25(54.1%)
Projection: Late Round 4- Round 6 → Round 4-5
Comp: Kamu Grugier-Hill → Oren Burks
I was happier with his tackling during this film study than I was with the last two, but his tackling is still worrisome and inconsistent. He either hits too high and he doesn’t have the strength to bring them down or he’ll go low, but won’t bring his feet with him, and can slide off the tackle.
I think he still does a really good job of reading his keys, but there are also times where he is completely lost and nowhere near the ball. He needs to read the field better, outside of just his keys, and needs to develop some linebacker instincts. The more I think about it, the less it makes sense how he started at Alabama. As I stated earlier in his profile, his improvement from 2021 to 2022 was really good. I think he’s going to regret coming out this year. I think one more year at Alabama(like he originally said he was doing), would’ve been really beneficial to him. Despite his prospect grade going up slightly, I still feel like you are looking at a special teams and 3rd down role player who flashes here and there, but needs time before he’s considered for a three down role.
