Grading 2024 NFL Trades During Free Agency

Kansas City Chiefs Trade L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans

Kansas City Grade (2025 3rd, 2024 7th): B-

Tennessee Grade: (Sneed, 2024 7th): B

Thoughts:

Kansas City got a semi decent haul for a player they could not afford. Tennessee has struggled to make any corner work especially those drafted. The new regime already is showing change by giving up not a crazy amount for a great corner. The subsequent extension was somewhat pricey, but nowhere near outrageous for Sneed.

Chicago Trades Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers

Chicago Grade (2025 6th that could become 4th): A

Pittsburgh Grade (Justin Fields): A

Thoughts:

Chicago gets an A for the way Ryan Poles handled this situation. Could they have gotten more for Fields? Reports say so, but Poles did the best he could to put Fields in a spot to compete and start. Players will remember this and Poles continues to do his best to change the culture in Chicago. Pittsburgh turned Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph into Fields and Russ. The upside these two players offer dwarfs what Pickett and company could offer.

Pittsburgh Trades Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles

Pittsburgh Grade (2025 7th X 2, 2024 3rd Round): B

Philadelphia Grade (Kenny Pickett, 2024 4th): C

Thoughts:

Picket’s trade value was through the floor, yet the Steelers got a decent deal for him. Philly got a higher end backup, but his play style does not match Hurts, so it will be interesting to monitor.

Houston Trades Pick 1.23 to the Minnesota Vikings

Houston Grade (2024 2nd, 2024 6th, 2025 2nd): C-

Minnesota Grade (Pick 1.23, 2024 7th): B

Thoughts:

We dont love this trade for the Texans. They are on the way up and getting 2 seconds for pick 1.23 seems light. Even if Minnesota has a bad year and their pick is top ten in 2025, it is just an okay trade at best. On the other hand this was not bad at all for Minnesota, but this feels like extra steps.

Los Angeles Chargers trade Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears

Los Angeles Grade (2024 4th): D

Chicago Grade (Keenan Allen): A

Thoughts:

Of all of the people to cut/move to save cap for LA, Keenan may have been the worst idea. Herbert cannot be happy with this, and they did not even get a great return. Chicago got a great vet to pair with DJ Moore for Caleb Williams.

Washington Commanders trade Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks

Washington Grade (2024 3rd, 2024 5th): D+

Seattle Grade (Sam Howell, 2024 4th, 2024 6th): A

Thoughts:

Washington may really regret giving up on Howell like this. This is definitely biased as we are huge Howell supporters, but it also is due to the fact that we dont love the QBs after Williams. Daniels has concerns, Maye is a major bust risk, and Nix/Penix/McCarthy are all solid options (but may be more high floor/lower ceiling types of guys). Time will tell, but Seattle got a high end backup who is young and showed flashes last year. Howell could push Geno earlier than you think, but also Howell could take the time for development.

Arizona Cardinals trade Rondale Moore to the Atlanta Falcons for Desmond Ridder

Arizona Grade (Desmond Ridder): F

Atlanta Grade (Rondale Moore): A

Thoughts:

No clue what the Cardinals were thinking here. Ridder was the worst QB in the NFL last year and they already have Clayton Tune. The Falcons got another weapon and got a return for Ridder, nuff said.

Houston Texans trades Maliek Collins to the San Francisco 49ers

Houston Grade (2024 7th): C

San Francisco Grade (Maliek Collins): C+

Baltimore trades Morgan Moses to the New York Jets

Baltimore Grade (2024 4th, 2024 6th): C

New York Grade (Morgan Moses, 2024 4th): C+ (As long as they also add in the draft)

Pittsburgh Steelers trade Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers

Pittsburgh Steelers Grade (2024 6th): F

Carolina Panthers Grade (Diontae Johnson, 2024 7th): A

Thoughts:

At what point does the Steelers organization become responsible for all of these receivers going rogue. Johnson is the latest in a loooonnggg line of top receivers in the organization becoming disgruntled and needing to be moved. They get a F because it just does not seem to be getting fixed. George Pickens lovers beware, he is up next. As for the Panthers, it is an A. You need weapons to surround Young and Johnson is a great slot option with upside. If he does not workout he only cost the team a 6th.

Cincinnati Bengals Trade Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans

Cincinnati Grade (2024 7th): D+

Houston Grade (Joe Mixon): A

Thoughts:

The Bengals were going to cut Mixon, so at least they got something, though not much. The Texans get another veteran in this young locker room. Mixon was still good last year, and could have a year or two of tread left on the tires.

Carolina Panthers Trade Brian Burns to the New York Giants

Carolina Grade (2024 2nd, 2025 5th): B (Boy did they screw this up though)

New York Grade (Brian Burns): C without the extension, D with the extension

Thoughts:

The trade itself for Burns is a good haul by the Panthers. Except, the rumored offer they turned down from the Rams last year but too crazy to ignore, yet the old regime did. For the Giants, this feels like a bad move. The trade itself was fine we guess, but the extension is massive. Just a quick look into analytics and you’ll see Brian Burns pass rush win rate is average at best. To be fair this was on the lowly Panthers, but this contract could become an albatross.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Trade Carlton Davis to the Detroit Lions

Tampa Bay Grade (2024 3rd): B+

Detroit Grade (Carlton Davis, 2024 6th, 2025 6th): C- (But the Sneed trade makes this look worse)

Thoughts:

Tampa getting a 2024 third for Davis is really well done. We wonder who will replace him, but they shed a decent amount of cap. The lions got a corner which was needed, but one wonders why they did not send this deal over to the Chiefs for a far better player.

New England Patriots Trade Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars

New England Grade (2024 6th): D

Jacksonville Grade (Mac Jones): A

Thoughts:

In our opinion the best course of action for the new coaching staff in New England would have been to keep Jones and build up this team that lacks talent all over. They did not go this route. If they end up drafting someone at pick 3 to sit behind Brissett instead of trading out and amazing picks, this is going to be even worse. This team is nowhere near ready for a rookie qb. As for Jacksonville, it is a 6th for a high end backup.

Denver Broncos Trade Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns

Denver Grade (2024 5th, 2024 6th): D

Cleveland Grade (Jerry Jeudy): B before the extension, F after the extension

Thoughts:

We guess getting something for Jeudy is good, but why were they so eager to move him that they got pennies for the talent. Jeudy has been disappointing there is no denying, but at what point is the trade just not worth it. As for Cleveland, it was a great trade with a ton of upside. Then…. they went and payed Jeudy WR1 money when he has proven nothing. Cleveland’s negotiations department must employ a pushover because the contracts they are giving are insane.

Buffalo Bills Trade Ryan Bates to the Chicago Bears

Buffalo Grade (2024 5th Round Pick): B

Chicago Grade (Ryan Bates): C with upside

Thoughts:

Chicago gets a potential starter/high end backup for a day 3 pick. Buffalo gets a day 3 pick to a player that may not have made the team otherwise.
