The Carolina Panthers were the first team to make a move at head coach in the 2023 NFL offseason. Frank Reich is hired by the Panthers after they barely missed out on the playoffs. Many thought that interim head coach Steve Wilkes was the favorite, but Reich is now in after being let go by the Colts earlier this season.
This is a great hire by the Panthers as they have not had an effective offense in quite some time and Reich could bring that. People may look at the Colts and question his ability as a head coach, but it is safe to say Jim Irsay is a major reason for the dysfunction in Indianapolis. Reich seems to have had to constantly work with the quarterbacks given, and even did pretty well with Carson Wentz (which was a better pairing than credited). Matt Ryan was well past his prime and that experiment was doomed from the start.
Reich joins a Panthers team that has a young, elite defense that should have them in almost every game. On the offensive, where Reich is expected to make a difference, there is a bit more work to be done. The quarterback is a big question mark, but there are plenty of veteran options, or if he thinks Darnold still has something left. One would assume Reich will have the ultimate say in what direction the Panthers go.They do have pick 8 this year, but we feel as though Stroud is the only quarterback worth a top ten selection in this draft. It will be interesting to see if they make a big trade for a quarterback or take a swing at a mid level veteran to provide stability. Skill position wise they have a decent and young receiver core, with a decent running back committee. Look for them to add here in the draft. Frank Reich should be set for more success with Carolina than the Colts, and the Panthers should be early favorites to win the division in the 2023 season.
