Tommy Eichenberg Player Summary:

The  Positives

  • Mix of an old school thumper and modern day backer
    • You can see the “old school” LB in him. When he sees back field mesh he triggers down hill
  • Box play: Fills gaps well
  • Tackling
  • In 2023 film, Eich looks much quicker and more agile
  • Eich still lacks “top end speed”, but speed doesn’t look as bad in rescout as we originally thought
  • Zone coverage overall looks better in rescout than we originally thought

The Negatives

  • Limited man coverage tape: Never really covered anything past a flat route by the back
  • Looks like he lacks top end speed
  • At times he can get down hill too quick and get out leveraged
  •  Maryland’s option/RPO offense pulled him out of position a few times
  • Zone awareness could be a little better
    • There’s a play against Maryland, where he start chasing a shallow crosser despite teammate Josh Proctor standing right next to him and then they hit the 10 yard in the window Eich is supposed to be in
  • Shedding blocks lacks consistency

Tommy Eichenberg, the first thing we noticed about his 2023 film is that he looks much quicker and more agile. That’s all well and good, but at what cost? We felt his box play(his strength in 2022) is a bit more inconsistent now, and not at the caliber of 2022. It doesn’t feel like he can take on O-Linemen the way he did last year. We believe his 2022 film is stronger. We still think he’s a top prospect at the backer position, but it feels like it’s for different reasons now than last year.

Updated 3/9/24: Almost everything we noted in Eichenberg’s original summary pretty much stands true. He looks much quicker and more agile than 2022. Upon rescout, his box play overall is still very strong. We originally called it “more inconsistent”, but we noticed that the inconsistency is in his ability to shed blocks. He’s usually in the right spot, but just needs to work on getting off blocks. His 2023 film is definitely stronger than we originally thought, and a big reason for that is his coverage skills looked better upon the rescout. We believe he could POSSIBLY be this year’s Jack Campbell (Lite).

Updated 3/9/24:

  • Combine numbers and rank added to measurable portion of profile
  • Grade changed from “61%” to “64%”
  • Projection changed from “Day 2” to “Late Round 2- Early Round 3”
  • Comp changed from “Blake Martinez” to “Ceiling: Jack Campbell Lite; Floor: Blake Martinez”
    • Despite Martinez career falling off after a strong start in GB, we still think Martinez was enough to show that Eichenberg has a good not great floor, but after a rescout we think Eich also has the upside to POSSIBLY be this year’s Jack Campbell, but the lite version.
