    • Josh Newton stock up with improvement to footwork

Josh Newton Player Summary:

The  Positives

  • Flashes physicality against receivers
  • Comfortable from press or off, but prefers to press it feels like
  • Tackles well for someone who looks like they want nothing to do with contact
  • Liked blitzing. It was the most effort we saw from him coming down hill

The Negatives

  • Wants no part of run support or tackling(when possible)
  • Can get very lazy if boot away
  • Can get caught flat footed from press
  • No moves when blitzing, just tries to run around people

Josh Newton is a really good coverage prospect in this year’s class. He’s good in zone, and really good in man. He’s comfortable playing from press or off, but it definitely feels like he has a preference to press. However, he wants nothing to do with run support and tackling(when possible). When he does tackle though it looks pretty good.

Updated 3/20/24

  • Combine numbers and rank added to measurable portion of profile
  • Grade switched from “62%” to “64%”
  • Projection switched from “Day 2” to “Late Round 1- Round 2”
  • Negatives Removed:
    • Can’t keep up with speed going vertical
      • Newton matched Travis Hunter off the release and lost a lot of ground once it became a foot race
        • Travis Hunter must be fast af because Newton’s 40 time is not as bad as we would’ve thought
    • At times will take more steps than necessary to break on or with routes
      • Newton showed much improved footwork at Combine
