Player Comparison: Shades of Evan Neal
Best Team Fits: Run favorable teams
Joe Alt Summary:
The Positives
- Quick, choppy feet
- Moves well, can pull and release to get out in front of screens
- Gets the job done for the most part in run/pass game, but doesn’t really blow anyone off the ball
The Negatives
- Gets driven back relatively easily/strength in question
- Looks like he struggles to anchor against power
- Seen against Ohio State and Clemson
- Arms at times look short considering how tall he is
- Big leaner in pass pro
- Lack of aggression *ohio state
- Tries to do too much when blocking at the second and third levels, wants to hit everyone who comes into line of sight
- Really inconsistent tape
- There were a good amount of reps in the Clemson game where if it wasn’t for the LG, Alt was probably going to get beat. He also had a chipping TE a couple snaps
Side Notes:
- Ohio State tape is not great. Louisville tape shows why he’s arguably a top 10 overall prospect. Better Louisville tape, but not consistent. See a lot of the same bad tendencies.
- His kick step doesn’t gain ground, it’s more lateral, which is interesting
Joe Alt is highly considered one of the 2024 Draft’s best tackles and overall prospects, and we know it’s going to be controversial, but we don’t see it. He does stuff well and flashes the ability to be a top prospect, but the inconsistency is off the chart. The Ohio State tape is ROUGH! The Louisville tape shows a top prospect, but shows the same bad tendencies you see in the Ohio State game. If he wasn’t 6’8” we’d be arguing for him to move to IOL. Alt in many ways gives us Evan Neal vibes(and we thought Neal was a top of the line OT prospect). A “top” prospect who everyone believes is the top tackle prospect, but very easily could bust and make everyone look bad.
Updated 3/13/24: Everything we said about Alt in our original summary holds true. Nothing really changed. Notre Dame offensive lineman for the most part seem to pan out: Quentin Nelson, Mike McGlinchey, Aaron Banks to name a couple. But to be fair Alt is the first one that we have scouted in the existence of The Gridiron Review, so we don’t know if all ND OLs had their fair set of issues before working out in the league. Alt to us doesn’t justify the hype of being the best linemen in this class at all. We believe that Alt is going to require a decent amount of help from Guards, Tight Ends, and Backs at the next level to sustain a “high level”of success. His footwork is the only thing that keeps him from getting beat religiously, and without it he’d probably be a Day 3 prospect.
Updated 3/13/24:
- Combine numbers and rank added to measurable portion of profile
- Projection switched from “Day 2, Fringe Day 1” to “Early Round 2, Late Round 1 to the right team”
- Negatives Added
- Looks like he struggles to anchor against power
- There were a good amount of reps in the Clemson game where if it wasn’t for the LG, Alt was probably going to get beat. He also had a chipping TE a couple snaps.
- Side Note Added
- His kick step doesn’t gain ground, it’s more lateral, which is interesting
