JJ McCarthy Player Summary:

The  Positives

  • Excels throwing on the run
  • Pretty good athlete (though does not run as much as you’d think)
  • Does a good job moving around in the pocket and sensing pressure (especially stepping up)
  • Accuracy on touch throws and deep passes can be spotty but is more often there than not
  • Does not panic under pressure
  • Throws a good spiral
  • Strong arm
  • Physical Runner with pretty good vision

The Negatives

  • Has the same lower body build as Devonte Smith
  • Maturity questions
  • Throwing motion needs work (throws flat footed, falls off on throws to left)
  • Misses way too many quick throws
  • Needs to work on progressing past first read
  • Needs to reel in the ill advised gunslinger mentality throws
  • One of the big reasons for loss vs TCU including 2 pick sixes (that being said he did lead a strong comeback effort in that game as well)

The TCU game is a perfect microcosm of McCarthy as a prospect. The same player that threw two ugly pick sixes also almost led a major comeback with the team on his back. He makes way too many risk throws, but also makes a lot of wild plays. His maturity is questionable, not to mention his lineage is as well (if you know you know) but we hope the TCU game humbled him. He must put on some lower body muscle because right now he is on par with the slim reaper for leg size. He has a great arm and is an amazing athlete with great ball carrier vision to match. The floor and ceiling are miles apart but the upside is certainly there to be great.
