Edgerrin Cooper Player Summary:
The Positives
- Playing in space
- His highs are pretty high
- Flashes aggression
- Lines up all over the place
- Good spy
- Had 8 sacks as primarily off ball LB, which is pretty impressive
- Solid man coverage capability
- Key/assignment driven
- In the Auburn game, his head was on a swivel in zone coverage much more, was squeezing routes in the area, and actually looked even better in space than we thought in our original scout
The Negatives
- Block shedding needs work
- Tackling inconsistencies
- Sometimes tackles high
- Sometimes just tries to deck people and whiffs
- Eyes glued to QB in zone in Miami game
- Tripped over himself way too many times in the Auburn game
- Movements/motions and misdirection make him think and slow him down
Edgerrin Cooper is not quite the prospect we thought he was. We felt like we heard his name being thrown around a good amount, but it doesn’t feel warranted. Cooper is a prospect that more so flashes what he is truly capable of rather than be consistent about it. We like the Trenton Simpson comp especially when you look at his pre-snap alignment, but there’s a hint of Devin Lloyd(and not in a good way). One of our big notes about Lloyd was that we had concerns about his effort, and we get very similar vibes from Cooper. In the Miami game, you could see the difference in his pursuit in particular in the Miami game through most of the game and the last couple min when they needed a stop. Potential is there if you can get him to give 100% every snap.
Update 3/2/24: Upon a rescout, Cooper is a better prospect than we found him to be in our original scout. That being said he still has his issues that it feels like some people are ignoring. He is very assignment driven and a big key reader, which is great, but it also gets him in trouble and can lead him away from the play. Movements/motions and misdirection make him think and slow down his reaction to the play. In zone coverage he has a tendency to stare at the QB way too much at times leading him to not squeeze and recognize what’s going on around him. Biggest takeaway is that his effort wasn’t as much in question this time around.
