Caleb Williams Summary:

The Positives

  • He may be the best prospect off script ever coming out of college (And he does not do it pointlessly or roll out of a clean pocket)
  • He is a plus athlete and runner
  • Top level pocket awareness and poise
  • Beautiful mechanics both on and off platform
  • Great arm (though not best in the NFL level)

The Negatives

  • He thrives so well off script that he may be a little behind in playing within the script. Would love to see him develop more rhythmic stretches of passing.
  • He can be slow getting through progressions
  • Accuracy can be spotty at times and that goes along with learning to better throw in the pocket in a rhythm
  • Gunslinger mentality leads to too many turnover worthy throws (though also leads to some wild plays similar to Josh Allen)

The random people and analysts saying Williams will bust is so odd. Saying he cannot play within a script is just flat out wrong. While he can certainly learn more in this area, he does show the ability to do so on film repeatedly. The hype around Williams is real. He is an absolute wizard in the pocket, routinely escaping sacks that seem borderline impossible. That is, in our opinion, where the Mahomes comparisons come from. His improvisation skills and pocket presence are the best in the last couple drafts at the least. However we think the comps to Mahomes are not completely accurate. Williams is a very effective runner. Not to say Mahomes is not but we could see Williams using his legs in designed runs far more than Mahomes. We also believe Mahomes has the better arm. The big difference, though, is expectations. Mahomes was not a top 5 pick and was allowed to sit for a year and learn. Williams will most likely not have that luxury as he is the clear number 1 pick (in our opinion) at the moment.
