Well the time has finally come for Frank Reich to be the fall guy in Indy. It went from Wentz, to the OC, to Ryan, and now to Reich. While he may not have been the best coach in the league, the dysfunction is hardly his fault in Indy. From the inefficient quarterback play, to the disappointing defense, the problems are all over the place for this team.
Perhaps even more interesting than the fire, is the hire. Jeff Saturday was named interim head coach. What followed was an official press conference by Jim Irsay that was… odd to say the least. As ProFootballTalk noted
Saturday is most certainly set up for failure. It is reported that no one on his staff has experience calling plays at the NFL level. Combining this with an injured Jonathan Taylor, a 6th round pick starting (although we do like Sam’s upside), and a less than ideal defense leads one to believe this team will continue to trend in the wrong direction. I mean Saturday said it best himself:
This will be a fun experiment for sure by the Colts, but Irsay continues to show his awfulness as an owner that is too involved and a team that will most likely be starting its sixth quarterback in six years come week one next season.
We all know that Irsay is atop the list of the worst owners in football. We just wonder how many quarterback and coach careers will be tarnished due to ignorance. Irsay called his GM Chris Ballard “a winner.” Last time I checked, winners know how to build winning rosters. It is very obvious that Ballard is the issue, but it does not seem like anything will change until Irsay is no longer in command. Everyone has some good moments, and Ballard has hit on some of his draft picks like Nelson and Leonard, but he has very clearly ignored the needs of the team for years now, the most noticeable being WR. His negative qualities are much worse than the occasional positives.
