Our Bills Ideal Offseason Plans/Thoughts:

  • This Buffalo Bills team seems like the ‘91-’94 Bills team that made four consecutive Super Bowls. They’re good enough to continue winning the East and getting into the playoffs, but continue to get edged by either the Chiefs or Bengals. The team as a whole isn’t even that bad. In their first season without former OC Brian Daboll, Josh Allen turned the ball over an NFL high 19 times. Let’s dive into where we think the Bills need help!
  • Some people are going to disagree with this, but the Bills need to address the RB room. Look, Devin Singletary has really kicked it into high gear over the last couple seasons showing that he’s powerful despite his size. However, Singletary’s workload decreased as the season went on and 2nd round pick James Cook started to emerge. We like Cook but he is not a fully developed runner yet. The Bills need to bring in a complimentary back who can grind out tough yardage through the tackles. Everyone thinks about Bijan Robinson, but Texas RB Roschon Johnson would be a great fit in Buffalo. Standing at 6’, 219, Roschon can take on short yardage and goal line work while also mixing in with Cook on early downs. Johnson, Cook, and Hines would be one of the better committees in the NFL. Johnson wouldn’t be taken at 27, but potentially with their 2nd rounder.
  • The Bills WR room at this moment is strong but basically on the edge of a cliff. Diggs, Davis, and McKenzie are a really strong trio. Stefon Diggs continues to play the stereotype diva receiver with childish antics. So they need to decide what to do with him. Where Diggs expects to go that’s going to be as good as Buffalo is unknown, but this situation needs to be monitored closely. All of their depth except for 5th rounder Khalil Shakir is set to fit FA. They need to address this, but could also use a burner to stretch the field. Coming off a pretty injury riddled season, Mecole Hardman may not be as expensive as some people think. He would be a solid WR4 while bringing speed lacking by the rest of the room. If Diggs is moved for anything other than another WR the room is going to need more help than just bringing in Hardman.
  • The offensive line needs work. Dawkins, Brown, and Morse seem to be the three starters that are safe, although Brown could be upgraded. The two guard spots are what need the most work. Ryan Bates is coming off a pretty good year, so if you need him to start again he definitely could. Rodger Saffold is coming off an extremely rough year and should not be brought back unless in a backup role. USC’s Andrew Vorhees could be an option here, but he just tore his ACL at the combine and will probably miss a big chunk of the 2023 regular season. We are not as high on Florida’s O’Cyrus Torrence as everyone else. The answer to the guard position should ultimately be found in FA, and Dalton Risner could be the guy.
  • The Bills LB room is extremely interesting. They have one of the best linebackers(especially in pass coverage) in Matt Milano. They are set to lose Tremaine Edmunds though who despite being in the league 5 years already is just 24 years old. Unless Edmunds is willing to take a discount he is probably priced outside of the Bills range. They did draft Terrel Bernard in the 3rd round last year. People think you need to replace players lost with similar players, but the reality is that you have to replace the production (Moneyball babay). Look for Iowa’s Jack Campbell, who’s coming off a strong combine, to be on the Bills War Room board. Campbell is an old school thumper at LB and could replace Edmunds presence on early down and short yardage/goal line work, yet was graded as a better coverage linebacker in college than Devin White. Campbell and Bernard could split reps to replace Edmunds production. Plus this is a much more cost effective option as neither Bernard or Campbell will need to be paid for a few years.
  • Even with Tre’Davious White missing the first half(roughly) of the season, Elam did not make a splash in his rookie year and it even sounded like he was playing in a rotation. However, it’s definitely possible he takes a year two leap and becomes the starter opposite White. 6th rounder Christian Benford came out this year and had a really strong rookie campaign. The secondary over the last couple seasons has been the Achilles heel of this team though. With minimal needs, the Bills could absolutely address the CB room again this year despite having Elam and Benford. His game and technique is still a bit undeveloped, but coming off a really strong combine, Maryland’s Deonte Banks could be a name to watch late in the first round. Banks could absolutely be an option for the Bills at pick 27 to come in and compete with the rest of the room.
  • All signs are indicating at the moment that Jordan Poyer may have played his final snap as a Bill. In his time in Buffalo has emerged as one of the best safeties in the NFL. Luckily, Micah Hyde is still under contract and has the FS position locked down. The Bills are going to need to replace Poyer at SS though. Vonn Bell, although probably not as good in coverage as Poyer, would be a really strong option for Buffalo. If they can’t afford Bell, Mike Edwards could be a quality signing. Edwards has played in more of a sub package role in Tampa over the last few years and could be looking for an opportunity to start full time.
