For us it was never going to be a serious competition, but to some it was set to be a heated battle. Our favorite to be the starter for the Bucs emerged victorious, and we feel it was the correct choice in Baker Mayfield.
Baker has had a rough go of it in the NFL, but did look decent in limited action with a very injured Rams team last year. When you look at his track record of teams, it is a lot of bad ones. Carolina before this season has not been a winning culture since Cam left. Cleveland is, well, Cleveland. Baker gave them the most hope that franchise has had in a long time. Now, we are not saying Baker is great, but this will be the best weapons group he has played with by a mile. It is also a spread scheme that he hasn’t really had since college where he thrived most.
There is a good chance he is more than average throwing to Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Cade Otton, and more and ends up returning somewhat to a decent playing level. He seems to get along with his teammates and has looked far better than Kyle Trask in the preseason. We hope the offensive line holds up and Baker finally returns to some form of success. Tampa Bay went with the right player for the starting job.
