With two weeks left of the preseason, the Arizona Cardinals trade Isaiah Simmons to the New York Giants in exchange for a 7th round pick in the 2024 draft. The former first round pick has played for the Cardinals since being drafted 8th overall in 2020. It had recently been reported that he made a position switch from linebacker to defensive back. Now in New York, their position of need is linebacker and not safety, so it will be interesting to see if he moves back.
This trade is a steal for the Giants regardless. They get to boost their defense at the cost of a bag of peanuts. Simmons provides the New York Giants with defensive versatility and can put him at multiple positions, so it will be fun to see how defensive guru Wink Martindale utilizes him. As for Arizona, this trade makes no sense. They are a bad team entering a rebuild, but making awful trades like this does not help their case for not tanking. Simmons is realistically worth a 4th at the worst, so expect there to be rumors of an investigation into tanking by the league if head scratchers like this continue.
Isaiah Simmons’s tenure in Arizona feels very similar to Haason Reddick. A very athletic and talented player with positional versatility where Arizona just could not figure out the role correctly. Reddick has flourished since leaving Arizona, and we expect the same from Simmons.
