Most Surprising NFL Players Released on Cutdown Day

It is a day that most players dread. The NFL Players Released on cut down day take a huge hit to their dreams and aspirations. While this is not the end, they can still sign to a practice squad or another team, it does signify a moment in each players’ career that could make or break them. Most cut players can be somewhat expected, yet others come out of nowhere. Here are our most surprising players cut in 2023.

Bailey Zappe

The list has to start here. Do not get us wrong, Zappe was up and down last year and Mac Jones should be clearly starting. However Zappe can still be an upper level backup. Even more peculiar is New England also cutting Malik Cunningham, leaving only 1 QB rostered. They both signed to the practice squad so it is possible they are back on the main roster.

Elijah Higgins

Miami seems to plan on not featuring a tight end in the passing game at all. Higgins is a converted receiver that was drafted this year and seemed prime to make an impact. Now Miami only has two tight ends that are healthy on the roster. Durham Smythe is a blocking tight end, and Julian Hill is a UDFA who did not really shine in the preseason. Higgins got claimed by Arizona, so look for Miami to address the position further in the coming days.

Kyu Blu Kelly

Baltimore has a ton of defensive backs so we guess this is not ultra surprising. But, they usually do well with the day 3 corners and safeties and we felt like Kelly had the makings of a draft day steal for Baltimore. He again was already claimed by the Titans so we will see if he finds playing time there.

Demetric Felton

Cleveland just traded for Pierre Strong from New England, but even still Felton seems to offer a lot as a pass catcher. They must love Jerome Ford
