Cole Kmet Signs Extension with Da Bears

Following the recent trend of big extensions that are somewhat questionable, the Bears signed Cole Kmet to a 4 year, $50 million contract. Kmet has not been a feature of the Bears offense so far in his career, with career highs of 60 catches and 7 touchdowns.

Kmet may become a bigger part of the offense and may be worth this contract over time, but we doubt it. Why we say this is that Dalton Schultz, one of the best blocking tight ends who has had 3 seasons over 50 catches and a career high of 78, struggled to get a multi year contract. He hit the open market and signed a 1 year, $10 million contract after waiting it out. Kmet is not worth more than Schultz, and while the Bears could feature him more, we have a hard time believing Kmet will live up to this. It is an odd side step for a team that has been doing so well.
