Player Summary:

I don’t know where I got this assumption from, maybe it’s his size or the fact that he looks like box safety, but heading into Overshown’s tape I thought that he was going to be an outstanding coverage LB while struggling on early downs against the run. However, it was quite the opposite. Overshown was a surprising prospect in the box and against the run.

Against the run, Overshown had a slightly mixed bag when it came to being blocked. Sometimes he looked overpowered and overwhelmed against offensive lineman. Other times though, he was able to slip by blockers or even shed the block and make the play or at least be near it. His block shedding wasn’t bad although could definitely be improved upon. He’s a pretty secure tackler, but he also has the ability to lay the boom.

Generally speaking, as a box player, Overshown was asked to do a lot of blitzing for the Longhorn defense. They lined him up in pretty much every single gap as well as off the edge. His blitz volume was great to see, I think a heavy blitzing NFL team will love this kid. The only issue I have is that for as much as they sent him, he didn’t really have any pass rush moves. The only move he really flashed and it was only when he was coming off the edge was a spin move back inside after trying to speed around the edge. When they cross blitzed him or lined him up close to the line and stunted with him though he was disruptive. He wasn’t really required to get physical with lineman, he was able to use the speed he has to do what he does extremely well and that’s shoot gaps.

In coverage he wasn’t bad, but his coverage skills weren’t where I thought he was going to be either. I thought that he was good, not great, in zone, but I didn’t see enough of him in man to give him more than an average grade. In zone, his spatial awareness looked like it could use some work. He also looked like an awkward mover at times, while also looking slow on tape here and there. It seems like he lacks the burst to close in on routes to make a play.

Overall, Overshown is a big, lengthy LB who with the right coaching should be able to improve his coverage and absolutely use his length to his advantage, especially in that aspect of his game. His big frame looks like it could also be filled out a little bit more. He should be a good day one starter(in some capacity), but I think a zone blitz scheme would play heavily into what he does well. Overshown also has special teams experience and should be able to contribute there as well.
