Graded Running back Traits:

  • Ball Security: 10/10 (Three fumbles in four years of playing is incredible)
  • Blocking: 5/10 (He has the size to be an enforcer as a blocker and the hands to be a pass catcher so he has to improve his blocking. Unfortunately he was not asked to do it a ton and whiffed a couple times on blitzes)
  • Burst: 3/10 (I just want to see more here. Even an average burst would be amazing to see but he does not have it. He is a patient runner that does not have an explosion out of the side steps. You get glimpses every once in a while but just not enough)
  • Change of Direction: 6/10 (For a bigger back he has a patient running style that utilizes a ton of patience and jump cuts. However when going side to side and looking to cut upfield it takes a couple steps to get turned)
  • Durability: 6/10 (Missed two games this season, had knee procedure done before freshman season. Did handle heavy workloads the past two seasons though)
  • Elusiveness: 7/10 (Uses a decent amount of jukes and jump cuts to make defenders miss. Perhaps maybe too many for his own good but he is very effective especially when tacklers do not have help)
  • Pass Catching: 8/10 (A major factor in the passing game with over 60 catches his last two seasons with only a few drops. He also runs a decent route tree for a big back. However, his speed could limit his overall upside as a route runner at the next level)
  • Power: 8/10 (Invites contact and seeks it out. Can power legs through and push the pile. Could actually stand to utilize more power moves such as stiff arms and trucks)
  • Speed: 5/10 (He can break off a run here and there but his speed is not elite and may even be slightly below average for a running back when paired with his lack of burst)
  • Vision: 6/10 (Uses patience to find the right running lane to get through. However, can be too patient and miss the opening or get happy feet instead of bursting through when it is called for. Decent at knowing when to bounce it or keep it inside)

Prospect Grade: 64/100; 64% (Starter Potential)

Projected Draft Day: 2

Player Comparison: David Johnson

Player Summary: Charbonnet is pretty elusive for a big man who has a lot of power. He may use his patience and stutter steps too much for his own good, but he makes players miss and has great hands as a pass catcher. He needs to learn to not always use a patient style and could use some improvement to his blocking. He reminds us of David Johnson with the power and elusiveness blend, but Johnson is probably a better athlete than Charbonnet. He also could be compared to James Conner but he is probably a better athlete than Conner. Charbonnet’s athletic testing could determine his draft status. If he does better than expected he may be taken even as high as the second round. Worse could cause him to fall to the 4th.
