Player Summary: Jones is a player I wanted to scout for a while because I feel like I’ve been hearing his name more and more as we get closer to the draft. I really liked Jones’ tape to the point where I could see him going in the first based on skill, but I just don’t see it at his size. Jones is one of the smallest CBs coming into the league that I remember in recent memory. On top of the issue of size, Jones lacks starting experience. It was difficult to find Jones on the field pre-snap, and it made me realize that he was not an every down player. Jones also lacks physicality in coverage; however, in this situation I can understand why he is not as physical as other prospects. Being physical at his size probably won’t be as effective as bigger CBs.

In terms of the positives though, Jones seems to be a really solid coverage corner with great zone vision and awareness. He may not press at the line, but he does like to keep hands on the receiver down the field in coverage. Jones is also a great tackler with every spot versatility in the secondary. Jones may be undersized but he plays with a lot of heart. The play is never over for him; he plays and fights to the whistle every snap he is in.

I really liked the Logan Ryan comp. Jones is smaller than Ryan, who is not the biggest guy himself. Although I didn’t see Jones play any nickel at Houston I could see where he plays nickel at the pro level. I could also see a situation where he kicks back and plays safety at the next level. I think Jones could become an overall playmaker much like Ryan has been at the pro level.
