Strengths: Good hands on balls thrown at chest height and above, nice subtle movements when running route, good speed and size combination, decently elusive, seems to have good vertical, does a good job at tracking deep throws, good enough at high point catches, elite run blocker
Weaknesses: Uses body to trap too many throws on throws below chest, torn ACL caused him to miss almost all of this season,
Projected Draft Day: Day 2
Player Comparison: Denzel Mims
Player Summary: There is almost no film of Pickens this season due to a torn ACL. He seems fully recovered though, as he came back in time for the Georgia championship run. Pickens possesses a high upside size and speed combination, with good route running and RAC ability to match. When throwing jump balls or passes at chest level and above, he uses his hands and vertical to high point the pass and be the only one with a chance at it. However, when throwing low, he traps the ball too much with his body and does use his hands as much. He is also a willing and elite run blocker coming out of Georgia’s system. The comparison to Mims is not a comparison based on NFL production, where Mim’s slow career start is apparently due to his inability to grasp the playbook. He reminds us of Denzel Mims coming out of college. Both have unique size speed combinations and both have good hands, but also do their best on the boundary versus being underneath receivers. Mims was a projected day two pick with the potential to sneak into the first round if a team wanted to take a chance on his physical traits. I see the same for Pickens. He has the tools to be a first rounder, but is mostly seen as a second or even third rounder. It just takes one team, if he tests really well, to think it is worth a late first. This is not a comparison based on Mims’s NFL production, whose slow career start is apparently due to his inability to grasp the playbook.
