- Other Notes: Kenyon Green did not have a good combine at all. He did not test well, and he left a pretty bad impression on me after the on field drills as well. Numbers aren’t everything, but for a first rounder you would’ve hoped for better than what he produced.
Strengths: Good use of hands, arm extension, foot work
Weaknesses: Securing second level blocks, center of gravity, pulling
Projected Draft Day: Day 1
Player Comparison: Joel Bitonio
Player Summary: Honestly, I didn’t have a chance to watch any of Green’s tape before the combine. By the end of the combine, I was convinced Green had hurt his stock to the point where he had fallen to a day two pick. Going into his tape study I thought that he was just another overhyped prospect because of his combine, but I was wrong. Green may be the best overall lineman in this class. I watched tape where Green played tackle and guard, and then he apparently worked out as a center at the A&M pro day. Talk about versatility; this guy can play all five spots across the offensive line.
Regardless of whether he was at guard or tackle, I saw a really good use of his hands and arm extension when blocking. I also really liked Green’s footwork, I thought he looked pretty light on his feet for someone his size. Regardless of position, I thought that he had a minor tendency to overextend and shift his center of gravity.
When he was at guard, I thought that Green was smooth getting up to the second level in run blocking; however, when he got to the second level he occasionally stopped and looked around, kind of like he didn’t know who to hit. When he got to the second level and hit someone, it looked like he had some issues “securing” his block. The other note I had was that I didn’t see him pull that much. When he did pull it was usually on play action which I thought was kind of interesting. Green did not look that smooth though when he had to pull, nor did he look quick doing so, and I think that could be an issue heading into the league.
When he was at tackle, his second level run blocking didn’t look as bad. He seemed to have more confidence. I thought that his pass blocking “flaws” showed up more so than they did at guard, which would make sense. It seemed like he had more trouble against speed rushers, but not every rep. He was able to hold his own against speed rushers.
Overall, Green’s poor combine, could see him tumble a little bit in the draft, but should still be a first round pick. If a team is willing to overlook his poor combine, I could see Green being a top 10 pick.
