Prospect Profile: Jelani Woods

Player: Jelani Woods

School: Virginia

Height and Weight: 6’7”, 259

Combine Results:

  • 40: 4.61
  • Bench: 24
  • Vertical Jump: 37.5 (pro day)
  • Broad Jump: 129 (pro day)
  • 3 Cone: 6.78
  • Other Notes: Looked pretty good in the sled drill where others his size seemed to struggle. Showed pretty good hands and decent enough route running in pass catching drills.

Strengths: Elite size and speed potential, stood out to us at the senior bowl, pretty sudden turns when running routes

Weaknesses: Inexperienced at the position, only one year of production, looks super stiff when running routes, looks clunky on the field (not sure how else to describe it), lowers head down when trying to block,

Projected Draft Day: Day 2

Player Comparison: Current Day Rob Gronkowski

Player Summary: Jelani Woods was one of our biggest winners from the NFL combine. He had the most reps on the bench, and ran a 4.61 at his size which is insane. He also looked decent in the sled drill and showed good hands in the receiving drills. On tape, he looks extremely clunky when running short routes. His long speed and running with the ball in his hands is much more fluid. For someone that does look clunky he has pretty sharp turns in his routes. Make no mistake, he is very raw, and has a ton of developing to do. He is a willing blocker but needs havy refinement especially on pass blocking. He reminds us of the current Rob Gronkowski. Not the one that for most of his career was an all time great. The player this year that is still productive as a blocker and caught 55 passes for 800 yards and 6 touchdowns. This is a realistic season I believe for Woods as long as he continues to develop and refine his game. If he does this he can be a matchup nightmare as his potential is unchallenged by the rest of the tight ends in this class.

Pro Day Update: Woods continued winning the draft process with the rest of his athletic testing. His jumps would both have been number one at the combine as well as his shuttle and three cone times. He showed good route running and hands as well and is approaching tight end one in the class in our eyes. As stated he is more raw than others in this class. But in a year where there are no elite level , day one ready talents, Wood’s potential with his size and athleticism could have him taken much earlier than you would expect.
