Things NFL Draft

Prospect Profile: Chris Olave

Player: Chris Olave

School: Ohio State

Height and Weight: 6’0”, 187

Combine Results:

  • 40: 4.39
  • Bench: DNP
  • Broad Jump: 32’
  • Vertical Jump: 124’
  • 3 Cone:DNP
  • Other Notes: Looked good on receiver drills, nice extension on a couple deep throws on the go routes, ran an official 4.39 which was not the crazy unofficial 4.26 time but it still looked effortless.

Strengths:really good route running with advanced moves such as the Stefon Diggs/Davante Adams stutter step move (see tape versus Oregon), uses hands to catch, good enough speed, releases off the line at different tempos, pretty good high pointing for size

Weaknesses: Does not possess the next level size or speed that makes scouts drool (however he does not win in this way)

Projected Draft Day: Day 1

Player Comparison: Justin Jefferson

Player Summary: When it comes to Olave, one is reminded of previous players who were elite route runners with good hands who were overlooked because they did not possess blazing speed or size. Guys like Jusitn Jefferson, Devonte Smith (yes I know he was picked early in the first, but he also was aided by a historic season), Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, and more were all knocked coming out of college for not being the fastest or the biggest. Hands and route running have to be one and two for most important receiver traits, and Olave has both. Olave may or may not be the first receiver off the board this year, but there is a big chance he will be the best. I would argue he has the highest floor and can come in on day one and be a 120 target guy. Our comparison for him is one of the best route runners in the league in Justin Jefferson. Much like Jefferson, Olave just came in and ran faster than what people expected. Sure, it was not the 4.26 that was initially recorded, but a 4.39 is still very good for a player who wins with routes. The Jefferson comp goes way beyond skill set. Heading into the draft, Jefferson was overshadowed by his running mate in Jamar Chase. The same seems to be occurring with Garrett Wilson. Although I am not the biggest fan of Wilson, for the record. Olave will most likely not be the top receiver taken, but with his route running and speed he will make an immediate impact, much like Jefferson.
