Penn State Nittany Lion’s Freshman Safety and former 4-Star recruit, King Mack, entered the Transfer Portal on May 2, 2024. Mack, the 6th ranked safety and 86th overall recruit in the 2023 class according to 24/7 Sports, didn’t play much as a true freshman. Mack totaled 3 tackles in 2023.
Mack sat behind a plethora of upperclassmen in the safety room, but was in line for at least a role if not a starting spot in 2024. Mack is a bit undersized, but according to his 24/7 recruiting profile he makes up for it with his athleticism and intangible qualities.
Mack was one of many Penn State players to transfer this offseason, but one of only four defensive players with the other three being on the defensive line. Most of the other transfers were WRs… Drew Allar lol.
Mack transfers to an Alabama program that just lost their True Freshman Safety Caleb Downs. Downs as a frosh was the SEC Freshman of the Year, 1st Team All-SEC, and 1st Team All-SEC Freshman. Mack, in what’s a fairly shallow Alabama Safety room, should be able to come in and compete for a starting spot right away. If Mack does find his way onto the field in 2024 as a starter, the Tide fans are going to have high expectations for their new young player since he would essentially be taking over for Downs.
