2024 NFL Draft’s Worst Prospect Team Fits: Drake Maye & Ja’Lynn Polk

We were decently against the Patriots taking a Quarterback unless it somehow became Caleb Williams. That obviously did not happen and they went with Drake Maye instead. In our opinion, this is not good for either side. We were adamant that Maye is far more of a project than people seemed to think, and also that New England (who were long rumored to be taking him), would be a worst case scenario for Maye.

Drake Maye needs a ton of development, which OTA and Rookie camp reports suggest is very much true. He also could have benefited greatly from sitting behind a true veteran and getting the Jordan Love treatment. While we like Jacoby Brisset, we do not view him as being talented enough to hold off a rookie for the whole season.

What makes this pairing such a bad fit to us is the Patriots weapons core. They have very little as far as established weapons, and their receiver room is a ton of WR3s that will be asked to play a much bigger part than that. Their offensive line is just okay (Maye’s worst trait is dealing with pressure) and Ja’Lynn Polk (who is another on the list for worst fit) is just a younger Kendrick Bourne. Luckily, the Patriots got a steal with Javon Baker falling to them, but even if he works out, their offense is going to be meh. The likely case is that Maye is pushed into starting action far earlier than he should be, and his development suffers because of this. It is far more likely post draft that Maye has a similar career to our comp for him in Sam Darnold.
