Despite it being a hot take among the NFL Draft community, we were not super high on Joe Alt. We had a Round 2 grade on him, but thought that he could justify the Round 1 grade by going to the right team. Let’s just say he went to one of the most favorable destinations for his skill set.
New Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh reunited with his old OC from San Fran, Greg Roman. Looking at what Roman has done recently as Buffalo’s and Baltimore’s OC, he loves to run the ball. Look at Michigan the last few years, they loved to run the ball. The Chargers are going to look to set the tone on the ground from the first snap of the 2024 season.
We thought that Alt would fit in really well with a run heavy team, as that’s what we saw as his strength. Not to say Alt can’t pass block, but from a technique and mechanical standpoint we thought that there were some not so great tendencies that may get him in trouble in the NFL. The biggest of those being that he’s a heavy leaner. Overall, his tape is inconsistent with the Notre Dame and Clemson games raising concerns.
