2024 Combine Scouts Notebook: Quarterbacks, Running Backs, and Wide Receivers

Last year, much like every other platform, we at The Gridiron Review vouched for a Winners and Losers of the Combine article. However, we knew we wanted to do something different. This year we will be changing our Combine coverage to a short series we are calling “2024 Combine Scout’s Notebook”. Essentially rather than gather our thoughts and organize them we will give you an inside look at what our notes end up looking like while watching the Combine. You will be able to see our thoughts and reactions, things we were happy with and things we weren’t. Let’s dive into Day 3!

Running Backs

  • Trey Benson runs surprising time for power that he has
  • Laube runs great time for his role
  • Allen and Gore Jr not running is a bummer especially with our concerns about Allen’s speed
  • Jaylen Wright’s jump is eye popping but vision doesn’t match athleticism. Plays much closer to his 4.44 time than 4.38
  • Estime time is a little disappointing but his game isn’t built on speed
  • Guerrendo runs amazing time and is the biggest winner of the day with all the testing

Wide Receivers- 1st Group

  • Javon Baker slightly disappointing time
  • Burton and McMillan run about right
  • Coleman runs good enough time
  • Franklin measures in short
  • Jha’Quan Jackson runs awful time
  • Cornelius Johnson runs amazing time
  • Legette has amazing second time for 221 pounds
  • Adonai Mitchell runs blazing speed and great jumps
  • Coleman and McConkey have amazing gauntlet drills
  • Franklin looks shaky on gauntlet

Quarterbacks- 1st Group

  • Leary looks up and down  (but it is overall positive)
  • Hartman struggles mightily on throwing drills
  • Mitchell really struggles in pass catching drills (maybe injured?)
  • McCarthy and Nix look great in the passing drills
  • Milton has better accuracy than anticipated
  • Drake Maye is itching to be out there but decided not to throw?… Okay
  • Milton has amazing go route reps
  • McCarthy shows off good arm
  • Nix has up and down deep ball but does show the arm for it
  • McCarthy aces the question from Eisen regarding him not being required to carry the team

Wide Receivers- 2nd Group

  • Odunze runs about right
  • Rice runs a great speed for his size
  • Brian Thomas runs incredible time to match his frame
  • Xavier Worthy has a record breaking time of 4.21
  • Tez Walker runs great time
  • Johnny Wilson runs eye raising time for being 6’6
  • Odunze and Walker run near perfect gauntlets
  • Thomas has a great gauntlet
  • Worthy not doing drills is rough when our concerns on him are his hands and effort
  • Roman Wilson struggles in pass catching drills
  • Brian Thomas Jr has a couple drops in the pass catching drills

Quarterbacks- 2nd Group

  • Kedon Slovis runs very surprising 40 in a good way
  • Reed looks shaky
  • Slovis shows off good arm strength and great deep accuracy (answering one of our questions on him)
  • Penix has a great day throwing overall
  • Rattler is up and down
