2024 Combine Scouts Notebook: Offensive Linemen

Last year, much like every other platform, we at The Gridiron Review vouched for a Winners and Losers of the Combine article. However, we knew we wanted to do something different. This year we will be changing our Combine coverage to a short series we are calling “2024 Combine Scout’s Notebook”. Essentially rather than gather our thoughts and organize them we will give you an inside look at what our notes end up looking like while watching the Combine. You will be able to see our thoughts and reactions, things we were happy with and things we weren’t. Let’s dive into Day 4!

Offensive Linemen

  • Joe Alt 40 probably better than we would’ve thought, but you see pretty good speed on film.
  • Did Cooper Beebe cut weight for the combine??? He looks slimmer and much more athletic than he looks on field.
    • 5.05 40??????? Dear Lord. He for sure doesn’t show that on film
  • Joe Alt is a former TE??? Uhhhhh not sure we see that on film, but will be taking a second look so we’ll see
  • Andrew Coker’s 40 feels about right.
  • Olu Fashanu 40, looked like an amazing start, but looked like he started to fall off about 20 yards in. Doesn’t have a 2nd gear for long speed… although being honest how often is he going to need it
  • Troy Fautanu 40 good, but thought he’d be a sub-5.0 guy
  • Thought Blake Fisher and Taliese Fuaga may run a little faster, but both move smooth as you see on tape
  • We believe Troy Fautanu is the most versatile linemen in the class as well
  • Despite what Jeremiah says, we are happy with the 5.19 for Tyler Guyton. We don’t see a former TE on tape or at least not the first time around, but we will take another look.
    • We had concerns about his speed, and his 40 works for us
  • Christian Haynes is one we still have to watch… built like a lineman up top, but small looking legs
  • Christian Jones great time! Definitely shows it on tape
  • 5.03???? Wow Beebe. First prospect we can honestly say tape doesn’t match the testing at all
  • Tanor Bortolini 4.94, GREAT run! With what looks to be pretty good size.
  • Coker speed continues to line up, but looks lighter on his feet than tape
  • Can’t explain it but Frank Crum definitely looks like a guy that would play for Wyoming lol, will be added to the list to look at
  • Troy Fautanu 40 a hair disappointing, long speed looks roughly what we thought, his get off looks slow and what’s slowing his time.
  • Fashanu hurt… damn. Hopefully the thigh injury isn’t too serious. Not seeing him in positional drills sucks for us, we wanted to see improvement in his mechanics.
  • 5.14 for Fuaga is awesome, right around where we would’ve pinned him. Great job
  • Really good wave drill rep for Isaiah Adams, lateral movement despite not looking good in tape, looked good here
  • Alt’s rep good not great, slipped
  • Beebe… damn my man, his name is going to be in our notes a lot. The way he moves is unbelievable
  • Coker wave drill rep looked good, not as heavy on his feet as tape
  • Fautanu, Fuaga continue to impress in wave drill
  • Zach Frazier wave drill rep looks better than his movement on tape, still not great though
  • Garret Greenfield arguably smoothest rep
  • Guyton’s rep very very strong
  • C.J. Hampton great movement
  • Haynes solid rep
  • LaDarius Henderson rep not that good
  • Christian Jones lateral movement continues to look a little awkward
  • Keaton Bills makes wide turn in long pull drill
  • Fautanu, Fuaga, Jones continue to impress
  • Frazier continues to show better, not great movement
  • Hanson great deep pull rep. Stayed closest to cones of everyone so far
  • Trente Jones has been impressive. Where did he play on Michigan OL?
  • Trevor Keegan too… pass rush drops kick slide rep didn’t look right and we can’t put our finger on why
  • Bortolini continues to impress
  • Beautiful rep by Fautanu
  • Something about Fuaga’s kick slide looked awkward
  • Christian Jones kick slide looks improved, which was one of the things we were looking for
  • Trente Jones pops up high in kick slide
  • Where has Foster been in the positional drills?
  • Where is Kiran Amegadjie at all????????
  • Fuaga kick slide looked better in left side pass rush drops drill
  • Alt doesn’t show the same quick, choppy feet in mirror drill as he does on film
  • Keaton Bills had feet moving in mirror drill but wasn’t gaining ground
  • Frank Crum an awkward lateral mover. Good 40, okay in drills, nothing special
  • Blake Fisher feet don’t look as quick going through mirror drill. Minimal taps as he moves laterally. Footwork could use improvement still as we noted while watching tape
  • Javion Cohen and Matt Jones have quietly had themselves one of the better drill performances of the first group
  • Slow lateral feet that showed on tape for Fuaga showed in screen drill
  • When did they change the screen drill from a run to a lateral shuffle?
  • Christian Jones lateral movement continues to look awkward
  • Is Matt Goncalves still hurt?
  • Where was Graham Barton?
  • Jarrett Kingston has a very nice build for a lineman
  • Beaux Limmer 40 a tad slower than we would’ve thought
  • Dylan McMahon looks slightly bigger than he did on tape
  • Good 40 for McMahon, but thought he’d be a tad faster
  • Dear Lord, Amarius Mims. 5.07 at 340…… Crazy.
    • Looks to have a slow-ish/awkward start, and picks up speed as he keeps moving
  • Really good time for Jordan Morgan. Build wise he looks good too
  • Patrick Pauls 5.14 is definitely better than we would’ve thought, that’s awesome. He looks very “leggy” though
  • Roger Rosengart looks small but was flying.
  • Penei Sewell is Kingsley Suamataia’s cousin???? Didn’t know that when we made the comp lol
  • The video of Suamataia jumping out of the pool is insane… haven’t seen that since Tristan Wirfs
  • Thought Sedrick Van Pran would run faster than 5.2
  • Christian Mahogany has a solid build with a good 40 time. Looked too stiff/tight running though.
  • Mims pulled up running his 2nd 40… DAMNNN ITTTTTT! Positional workouts were going to be big for him, but also for his 40m he was flying. His start was MUCH better than the first. He probably would’ve gotten a better second time
  • Paul’s 5.24 is about where we thought he’d run
  • Prince Pines hurt too. Second injury in this round of linemen. Jeeeeezzzzz
  • Dominick Puni, much better 2nd run. Over 0.1 second faster
  • Andrew Raym third OL to receive medical attention during 40s… Wow
  • Great first rep by Kingston
  • Brady Latham moving with no need bend, very high
  • JC Latham rep very good better than we would’ve thought
  • Great rep by Limmer
  • Unsurprisingly McMahon looks like one of the best movers of the OL
  • Nugent rep good
  • We thought Paul’s footwork was surprisingly good on tape, but Paul rep better than we would’ve thought. Doesn’t look as clunky moving as on tape
  • Wildly unimpressed by JPJ first rep. Lateral movement looks better but he doesn’t move smooth
  • Puni, undisciplined movement, too loose
  • Rosengart moves well in first rep
  • Hell yea Suamataia
  • SVP… KILLED IT! That’s how we thought he was going to look
  • Brady Latham wide turn on long pull drill
  • JC Latham long pull drill… freaking awesome. We noted on taped that he could pull but wasn’t the greatest mover. He moved really well on that first pull. Tight turn around the cone and all
  • When trying to turn the corner on long pull drill JPJ almost fell again. Not great start
  • Paul kinda looks like Dr. Eggman lmao
  • SVP slipped trying to turn the corner of long pull drill. Looked like he tried to cut the corner and then tripped over himself adjusting
  • Deep pull
    • Rosengart, Suamataia, Charles Thomas III, SVP close to cones great rep
  • Short pull
    • Latham stock up
    • Limmer stumble
    • Mahogany continues to look good
    • JPJ just looks stiff/tight
    • Puni putting together a pretty nice day overall
    • Walter Rouse wide turner
  • Pass Rush Drops
    • Good rep by JPJ, best rep of his positional drills
    • Didn’t love where SVP hands were on his kick slide, too low, down by his hips/thigh
  • Going left in Pass Rush Drops
    • Latham rep okay, not great
    • Strong start to the rep by Limmer, but then switched back to a right side kick slide… haven’t seen that before
    • Nugent’s feet look like they have been getting better. Super quick choppy feet
    • JPJ rep not great. Almost fell backward. Going to get caught on his heels, we noted it while watching his tape
    • Low hands again for SVP, don’t like it
  • Mirror
    • Kingston is having himself a day
